Desert Acre
One of the residents at Desert Acre.
Desert Acre is a real place: an acre of land with a ninety-year-old rock house located in the Chihuahuan Desert. It has been my mother's home for sixty years; it is where I grew up, and now I am back.
A quick introduction
I am Rainey Lynd, and I have returned to what will be my permanent home.
Starting Where I Am
There's a lot I'd like to do with this old place.
The backyard has room for a productive garden, flowering plants, and a haven for pollinators and wildlife. There are things to grow, things to repair, and a lot to learn along the way.
I'll be sharing what it takes to turn this acre into a more productive, useful place. I'll experiment with growing methods, harvesting and preserving what we grow, finding what works, and what doesn't. (I suspect there will be plenty of the latter).
I'm also putting my eighteen years of experience as a massage therapist to work building Your Body Called, a resource for understanding muscles, movement, and everyday aches and pains.
After all, taking care of the place we live also means taking care of the bodies doing the work.
Much of my time between now and the first of the year will go toward building that resource. As the new year begins, I'll pick up the gardening pace here on the Acre.
So, What Is This All About?
This isn't about creating a perfect garden, or a sexy body.
It is about using what you have, learning as you go, and implementing what works.
It is encouragement to move toward a better life for you, your family, and community.
Oh, and about that critter in the photo...
That is Augustus P. Hornsby, the resident wise-cracking sage. He is one of several characters that call the Acre home. They are as much a part of the Acre story and lore as the sun, dirt, and the changing seasons.
Desert Acre is taking shape.
